Police officially charge Mam
At about 5.20pm on October 18, Ezra Mam was involved in a car crash in Bardon, west Brisbane. The Broncos star crashed his Ford Ranger head on with a Toyota Camry near the intersection of The Drive.
After the crash, QPS police administered a roadside drugs test on Mam. The 21-year-old failed the test and further tests confirmed the roadside result.
“He was detained for further testing requiring bloods to be taken at hospital which was conducted independently of the QPS,” the Police explained last month.
Mam also did not have a valid driver's licence during the night of the crash.
Now, after weeks of waiting to know his future, QPS have officially charged the Brisbane Broncos player.
“The club was notified this afternoon that charges have now been laid,” Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy confirmed on Wednesday.
Mam will face court on 16 December.
Mam responds to charges
While he awaits his court date, Mam will take part in a rehab program. The five-eighth has already voluntarily entered himself into a program. He also has responded to the charges against him.
“I understand the seriousness of the situation,” Mam said in a statement to Code Sports.
“I understand the importance in myself standing up to take responsibility for my actions. I will cooperate with the legal process to come.
“I also understand my responsibilities as a role model in the community and I’m prepared to work hard to live up to those expectations going forward,” Mam added.
Mam’s manager, Nash Dawson, also revealed that the player has expressed his remorse to the other parties involved in his crash.
Dawson said: “I can confirm that everyday Ezra has inquired about the wellbeing of all parties involved. He understands the magnitude of the situation and has expressed he does not want to shy away from what has happened.
“Instead he wants to stand up and take accountability when he’s able.”
Broncos issue statement
After missing out on the finals series last season, the betting sites have the Broncos as long shots to contend for the Premiership this season. The club are in the middle of a rebuild with a new head coach. A scandal like this is the last thing they need.
Despite the obvious harm this case has on their 2025 NRL odds, Brisbane have not condemned the player and say that they will work within the system while the case is resolved.
“We will respect the legal process and will continue to work with the NRL Integrity Unit on next steps, as this matter moves forward,” club CEO Dave Donaghy said in a statement.
“Ezra is currently seeking external support and we will give him the time and space to do so. As the matter is now before the courts, we are unable to make further comment on this matter,” Donaghy concluded.
