Tempers flared ahead of NSW and Queensland’s State of Origin Game 2 matchup when Blues boss Michael Maguire was asked about whether his players deliberately targeted Maroons full back Reece Walsh in Game 1. The Blues boss insinuated that Queensland should worry about their own players’ conduct and not his.

Maroons legend speaks out

Maroons’ Reece Walsh was knocked out by Blues centre Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii just seven minutes into the first NSW vs. Queensland State of Origin Series match of 2024.

Suaalii was quickly sent off from the match for the dirty hit, becoming the sixth player to be sent off and the earliest player sent off in State of Origin history.

The match review committee also levied a four-match ban against Suaalii, potentially putting an end to his Blues career.

As Suaalii left the pitch, Maroons assistant coach Nate Myles had harsh words for Suaalii, asking him if he enjoyed his debut. Queensland boss Billy Slater refused to comment on the hit after the match. Queensland legend Johnathan Thurston took another approach.

The former Cowboys star accused NSW of targeting Walsh

“They clearly had a target on him and it didn’t turn out right,” Thurston said, “the officials had no other option, really.”

Maguire hits out at Thurston’s claim

When asked about Thurston’s comments ahead of State of Origin Game 2, Blues boss Michael Maguire could barely hide his anger at the comments.

“You’ve got to make sure that you don’t live in glass houses, that’s all I’ll say,” Maguire said.

“Things happen on the field. Joey (Suaalii) is a special human being, and for him to have to deal with that (wasn’t on). He’ll be in and around the camp at some stage, but things happen on the field.

“It’s glass houses. Interesting. He’s my player, they’re my players. If you want to have a crack at our players, we’re about us and what we’re doing, and you’ve got to make sure that when you’re with your players that you look after them. That’s what I’m doing.”

Later in his press conference, Maguire again refused to be drawn into commenting on whether his side targeted Reece Walsh.

“You’ve got to defend everyone. We’ve got to go out and defend what’s there, and it’s not about going after people. We’ve got to defend what’s in front of us,” he said.

State of Origin Game 2 preview

State of Origin Game 2 is on Wednesday, 26 June at Melbourne Cricket Ground. There’s not much to separate NSW and Queensland heading into this match, according to the betting sites.

PlayUp has made the Maroons slight favourites with $1.85 odds, compared to NSW at $1.95. Queensland were also favourites heading into Game 1. They lived up to that tag, winning 38-10.
We’d like to disagree with the bookies here, but we can’t see the Maroons failing here. They are coming into the match with better form and much less drama than the Blues.

Another State of Origin Game 2 best bet that is good value is OVER 37.5. The Maroons showed they are capable of surpassing this total on their own. Even if this match is tighter than the first, these teams should be able to score more than 38 together.
