Singles Struggles
Both Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson entered the singles main draw at the All England Club hoping to win a couple of matches. However, neither was able to make much noise, as they both bowed out by the second round.
Purcell was the first to fall. Facing newcomer to Wimbledon Otto Virtanen, Purcell was the prohibitive favourite to move on to the second round. However, a combination of big serving from Virtanen and overall poor play from Purcell led to the Aussie falling in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Thompson appeared to be headed for a similar fate after going down two sets to none against Pavel Kotov in the first round.
Thompson battled back to win three straight sets and squeak into the second round. He would then face American Brandon Nakashima and came out completely flat, falling 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Early Round Results
With both men bowing out of the singles draw early, they could put all their attention on doubles, where they are the 15th seed.
In the opening round they faced the British duo of Jay Clarke and Marcus Willis. Purcell and Thompson were expected to win the match, and they delivered. They made relatively quick work of the local men, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Their next test was Fabrice Martin and Matwé Middelkoop. Again, they cruised through, facing just one break point in the whole match which they won 6-4, 7-5.
Now into the round of 16, they still avoided facing ranked opponents. Rather, they came up against fellow countryman John-Patrick Smith and his partner Andreas Mies.
The match went similarly to their previous two as the two Australian’s played extremely well on their service games, giving up no breaks and only two break point opportunities.
They would break their opponents three times in the match leading to a 6-4, 6-3 win.
The quarterfinal saw them match up with their first ranked opponents in Argentinians Andrés Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez. The pair was ranked 11th and also impressed through the opening three rounds.
The Australians again served brilliantly with 14 aces, holding their opponents to one break. It was no walk in the park however as after winning the opening set 6-4, they lost the second in a tight tiebreak 7-6 (10-8).
They put the set loss behind them quickly and bounced back to win the third set 6-3, seeing them through to the semifinals.
Semi-final Matchup with Top Seeds
Matched up against top seeded prohibitive favourites Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, the semi-final was expected to be a tough task for the Australian duo.
However, from the onset of the match, it was clear that they were up to the challenge. They played exactly how they had been doing all tournament long, not allowing the moment to get to them.
They played their service games with extreme confidence and skill as they once again did not give up a single break all match.
When returning, they took their opportunities when they came, converting 2/3 break points in the match.
As such, they won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. The pair now heads to their first Grand Slam final together. Purcell has experience on this stage however, having previously won Wimbledon in 2022 and reaching the finals at the Australian Open twice.
Standing between them and the Wimbledon victory is the unseeded pair of Henry Patten and Harri Heliövaara who have completed upset after upset to get to this point.
Australian’s Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson have ripped through the men’s doubles competition at Wimbledon to reach the finals. They have dropped just one set and took down the top seed to get to this point as they look to raise the coveted trophy.
