That means that just three weeks into the season, already there are teams that have put themselves in an excellent position from which to finish in the top eight, while conversely, others – including a couple of teams touted as potential contenders entering the year – have their backs right up against the wall after disappointing performances last weekend – looking at you, Melbourne and Geelong. This week’s extended Round 4 contains plenty of big games, and with those games running throughout the week and the weekend, there will be a constant stream of AFLW action to sink your teeth into. Collingwood Magpies vs West Coast Eagles
The opening game of Round 4 is not exactly a blockbuster, but it is a huge game for both of these teams. The Magpies have had a shocking start to the year and currently find themselves sitting just one spot off the bottom of the ladder as one of just two teams yet to pick up any points this season. Not only that, they have failed to give much of a whimper in their three games to date. They were somewhat competitive against the Swans in Round 1, losing by 15 points, but since then they have been beaten by 47 points by the much improved Hawks, before the reigning Premiers in the Lions gave them a 52-point lesson last weekend. Finals are beginning to look beyond them, but all is not lost just yet. Over the next two weeks they have very winnable games against the Eagles and Bulldogs, and if they can win them both to get themselves to 2-3 their prospects over the back half of the year will look very different.
But of course, the Eagles have not been quite the easy beats of yesteryear so far in 2024. They have won two of their first three games, knocking off first the Tigers in Round 1 in a one-point thriller, before they beat the Bulldogs by 16 points last week, while sandwiched in between was a competitive loss to the Bombers. The win over the Bulldogs doesn’t necessarily mean all that much and was actually easily the closest the Dogs have got to anyone so far this season, but given the Eagles themselves have been perennial bottom-feeders, they will just be happy to be winning. But the Magpies, disappointing as they have been so far this season, will not roll over quite as easily as the Dogs. This is an absolute must-win for them and if they go down we can all but put a line through their finals hopes, but with their season already on the line, they can record a pivotal win over the Eagles.

Brisbane Lions vs Western Bulldogs
The second game of Round 4 is not, it’s safe to say, expected to be a particularly close one. The Lions are literally as short as possible in the betting markets, with the reigning Premiers set to host the team which has put its hand up as clearly the worst in the league this year. Of course, the Lions themselves did not have the ideal start to the season, going down by 44 points in a stunning result to the team that they beat in last year’s Grand Final in the Kangaroos. But they have bounced back emphatically since then. In Round 2 they knocked off the Dees in a low-scoring affair by three goals, before last weekend they were back to their best in a dominant 52-point win over the Magpies. Now at 2-1 and in 6th position, this game presents a great opportunity for the Lions to give their percentage a serious boost.
The Bulldogs start to the year has been nothing short of woeful, and three games in they sit on the bottom of the ladder with a percentage of just 24%!. They scored just 15 points in total over their first two games of the year, losing those by 63 and 40 points – and they came against the Giants and the Power respectively, not exactly world beaters themselves. Their ‘easy’ start to the season continued last weekend when they hosted the Eagles, and fortunately they were a little more competitive, losing that one by just 11 points and actually kicking a few goals. But their friendly fixture ends this weekend, and they are now faced with the toughest trip in the league up to Queensland to take on the Lions. This one could get ugly. There is an enormous gap between these two teams, and the Lions should take full advantage of that and pick up a big, big win.

Richmond Tigers vs Carlton Blues
Thursday night will see two teams whose seasons have so far panned out identically from a win/loss perspective lock horns when the Tigers take on the Blues at IKON Park. The Tigers had a disappointing start to the season when they lost a game they should have won against the Eagles by one point, and though they did not exactly set the world on fire the next week they did what they needed to do to get on the board against the Giants. Last week was probably their toughest opponent for the year to date in the Swans, but they also played by far their best game for the season. The Tiges were super impressive in that clash, winning 68-22 and earning a huge percentage boost which shoved them all the way up to 4th spot.
The Blues, meanwhile, also started the season in really poor fashion, being thumped by the Hawks in Round 1 to the tune of 38 points. Like the Tigers, they bounced back with a win the next week – theirs coming by just a solitary point against the Suns – before last week, also like the Tigers, they put in their best performance of the year against arguably their best opponent of the year. The Blues didn’t concede a single goal against the Cats, ultimately running out 29-5 victors to take their record to 2-1. With the worst percentage of the six teams with that record, the Blues are back in 9th spot, but if they can get their record to 3-1 they will be pretty content regardless of percentage. Both of these teams are likely to be competing for spots in the lower half of the top eight come season’s end, and whoever gets their record to 3-1 will put themselves in a great spot to snatch one of those finals spots. This one could easily go down to the wire, but the Tigers were really impressive last week and deserve their favouritism.

- The Kangaroos have won two of their first three games by 40 points or more, and they were both against sides that finished in the top four last season.
- The Lions have been increasingly dangerous each and every week, while the Bulldogs have a percentage after three games of just 24 (!) having lost two of those three games by 40 points or more.
- The Crows have been dominant at home for a long time, losing just three games there in the last four seasons.

North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Port Adelaide Power
The Kangaroos were not given an easy start to the season by the powers that be following their heartbreaking Grand Final loss last year, but they have handled it with aplomb. They could not have been more impressive in Round 1, knocking off the team that beat them in that Grand Final in the Lions by 44 points, before they were disappointed not to go two from two in a draw against the Cats the next week. But in Round 3, they were back to their dominant best against the Dees, systematically dismantling a side which entered the year with Premiership aspirations to the tune of 50 points. That start to the year has deservedly see them climb to Premiership favouritism, and they shouldn’t have too many troubles holding onto that for at least another week.
That’s not to completely discredit the Power, who have shown demonstrable improvement so far this season. It began with their most competitive performance yet in the Showdown when they lost by just 14 point to the 2nd-placed Crows, before they pumped the hapless Doggies the next week as if to prove the gap they have put on the bottom teams. Last week they failed to make it two from two, but nonetheless they were pretty solid against the Dockers and could easily have won a game that they ultimately went down in by eight points. Whether they can challenge for finals this year remains to be seen and it may be a little too soon for them just yet, but they have clearly got better in 2024. Unfortunately, so too have the Kangaroos, it seems, and they were already pretty damn good. The Power have been solid to start the year, but this game looks likely to bring them back to earth.

Gold Coast Suns vs Geelong Cats
Ostensibly this is a matchup between 16th and 15th, but don’t let that fool you – there is plenty on the line when the Suns host the Cats this Saturday. The Suns remain winless three games into the season, but it could easily have been very different. They were nowhere near it in Round 1, but in their last two games they have somehow managed to fail to pick up a win despite being just one point in arrears of their opponents over that time. In Round 2 they lost by a point to the Blues while last week they drew with the Giants, a frustrating fortnight which may well come back to bite a team which was hoping to play finals once again this season. And with a tough game to come against the Cats, they may very well find themselves still searching for a win after Round 4.
The Cats, too, have somehow not yet picked up a win, and they look well and truly out of place in the bottom four. In fairness to them they were pretty good over the first couple of weeks, losing first by just two points to the Demons and then drawing with a Kangaroos team which pumped both the Lions and the Demons either side of that Round 2 clash. But last week’s effort was a lot more disappointing. Up against the Blues in a game which presented as a good opportunity to finally get a win on the board, they failed to fire a shot, not kicking a single goal for the game and going down 29-5. Their Premiership aspirations are dwindling rapidly, and another loss this weekend would put not just that, but their finals hopes, in a whole lot of jeopardy. But this is a solid team that has played some good footy so far this season, and they can finally get their first win of the season on the board on Saturday.

St. Kilda Saints vs Hawthorn Hawks
You might not have picked it a few weeks ago, but this is right up there with the games of the round. Both the Saints and the Hawks have had terrific starts to the season, the Hawks having suffered their first defeat of the year last week while the Saints have won all three and find themselves sitting pretty on top of the ladder. St. Kilda have admittedly not had the most difficult of fixtures, none of the teams they have beaten exactly Premiership contenders, but equally none of them are bottom-tier sides and as the old saying goes, you can only beat who is in front of you. After pumping the Suns in Round One and then beating the Swans by 16 points the next week, the Saints had the biggest slog of their season to date last year against the Bombers but still managed to get the chocolates in a low-scoring affair, winning that one 23-15. Now they have perhaps their toughest battle yet against a Hawks team which has won plenty of fans in their three games so far.
Hawthorn started the year with a resounding win over the Blues , winning by 38 points in Round One, and went even better the next week when they thumped the Magpies to the tune of 47 points. Last week was always going to be a tough battle though as they headed to Adelaide to take on the Crows, and so it proved. The Hawks were competitive for a quarter in that one, but the class of the Crows took over thereafter and the result was a comfortable 58-32 result – though given the poor kicking of the Hawks in the second half, they could have got closer. This should be an intriguing game between two sides trying to establish themselves as top four contenders, and in a tight one, the Hawks can bounce back from last week’s loss and hand the Saints their first of the year.
Predicted Squads

Fremantle Dockers vs Melbourne Demons
It’s a shame this game is on at the same time as the Saints vs Hawks clash, because they are perhaps the two most interesting of the extended round. The Dockers have had a decent enough start to the season, winning two and losing one, though they have been a little erratic across those three games. They started in really impressive fashion, beating the Bombers by 43 points in Round One, before they failed to give a yelp in Round Two when going down 39-6 against the Crows. Last weekend, they did what they needed to do against a much improved Port Adelaide side, winning 37-29 in a tight and tense game. They are now interestingly positioned in 8th spot, sharing a 2-1 record with five other sides, and the difference between a win and a loss this weekend is significant.
The Demons, meanwhile, find themselves a long way from where they would like to be. Such an impressive unit last year, they snuck over the line in Round One against the Cats but have fallen in a heap since then. Admittedly they have had a really tough draw, but if they are to have any hope at winning a flag or even finishing top four they need to be competitive with the likes of the Lions and the Kangaroos, and they have not been. In Round Two they lost 33-15 to the Lions, while last week they were quite simply pumped by the Roos, going down by 50 points. They now sit at 1-2 with a meagre percentage of 54.2%, and another loss this weekend would put their season in significant jeopardy. They simply cannot afford to go to 1-3, but the Dockers won’t exactly hand them victory on a platter. This could be a tight game, but with a win an absolute must for the Dees, they can creep over the line to send the records of both of these teams to 2-2.

Adelaide Crows vs Essendon Bombers
The Crows entered this season with Premiership ambitions, and unlike a couple of their fellow contenders they have well and truly lived up to that billing so far. They are one of just two teams yet to be defeated this season, and they have been impressive in those wins, too. It took a little bit of work to shake off the Power in Round One, but since then the Crows have dominated, pumping the Dockers 39-6 before beating the then-undefeated Hawks 58-32 in an impressive display. They look every bit a contender this year and have put themselves in an excellent position from which to challenge for a top two spot, and with another win this weekend they can further solidify that.
The Bombers, meanwhile, have had a pretty indifferent start to the year. They looked like they were still on holiday in Round One against the Dockers, getting pumped by 43 points, but fortunately they bounced back the week after to record a 16-point win over the Eagles – not the most emphatic of victories but a victory nonetheless. Unfortunately they were unable to go on with that last week in a tough game against the Saints, but they were pretty competitive against a good team, going down by just eight points. But they will need to play out of their skin to be competitive once again in this one. The Crows might not have had as tough a draw as many of their fellow contenders, but they have still played some better teams than the Bombers and have beaten them easily. Expect another comfortable victory for the Crows in this one.

Collingwood Magpies vs Western Bulldogs
Games between the bottom two sides don’t typically inspire a whole lot of enthusiasm, and while that is the case for this game there is plenty on the line for the Magpies. Neither of these teams had won a game entering Round 4, but while the Dogs must be pretty much resigned to bottom spot at this stage, the Magpies will still be harbouring some ambitions to work their way up the ladder. But based on how they have played so far this year, that will not be easy. They were okay in their season opener against the Swans, but since then have been beaten by 37 points to the Hawks and then 52 points to the Lions. The pressure is mounting, and as one of the teams that plays two games in Round 4 this is set to be a huge week for the Magpies. Given how bad the Bulldogs have been, a loss to them would bring plenty of heat on the black and white.
The Dogs were given a pretty friendly start to the season as they attempted to work their way up the ladder, but they have done the exact opposite of clutching that opportunity with both hands. It could hardly have started worse as they scored just nine points in a 63-point loss to the Giants, of all teams, in their season opener, while the next week they managed just six points against the Power. They were finally somewhat competitive in Round 3, but they still went down by 11 points to the Eagles to take themselves to 0-3 with a percentage of just 24%. There is not a whole lot positive to say about the Dogs at this point and this looks set to be a long season, and while they will probably sneak a win or two somewhere and this could be as good a chance as any given the Magpies form, it’s impossible to tip anything but a Pies win in this one.

Sydney Swans vs Greater Western Sydney Giants
The Swans’ results so far this season have got progressively worse every week, and they will be hopeful of arresting that trend against their cross-town rivals in the Giants this Sunday. After opening their season with a 15-point win over the Magpies, the Swans went down competitively to the Saints before being pumped last weekend by the Tigers to the tune of 46 points. In what loomed as a relatively close game that was a really disappointing result, but if they can bounce back this weekend then they will be sitting at 2-2 and right in among the contenders for the bottom half of the top eight.
The Giants, meanwhile, have had a bit of everything so far this year. For a team with relatively meagre expectations entering 2024, their start to the season was super impressive even if it was only against the Bulldogs, as they notched up a 72-9 victory to finish the round on top of the ladder. With a tougher task against the Tigers the next weekend they unsurprisingly suffered their first defeat of the year, though they were still competitive. Then, to round out the trio of potential results from each game, they finished last week’s game against the Suns tied at 36-apiece. They are clearly a much more competitive unit than what they were last year, and a win against their fellow Sydney-based team would be a great way to establish themselves as a potential outside finals contender. But the Swans, despite their poor result last week, should still be the better team, and can get the job done to take their record to 2-2.

West Coast Eagles vs Brisbane Lions
The final game of the extended Round 4 will see both the Eagles and the Lions play their second game of the round, the Eagles looking to continue their strong start to the year and the Lions looking to continue building after their disappointing first round showing. For the Eagles, expectations were relatively low coming into the season, but a one-point win over the Tigers in Round 1 was a great way to kick things off. They couldn’t follow it up the following weekend against the Bombers but were reasonably competitive, and responded to that loss with a defeat over the Bulldogs – albeit not an overly convincing one. This one, however, will be a far, far more difficult proposition.
The Lions were pumped from pillar to post by the team they beat in last year’s Grand Final, the Kangaroos, in the opening round of the year, but since then they have gone about reminding the footy world that they are still going to be extremely tough to stop from going back to back. They beat the Demons in a low-scoring game by 18 points in Round 2 before demolishing the Magpies, and with two very winnable games in Round 4 they should really be sitting at 4-1 come the end of the week and with a much more healthy percentage than what they currently have. The Eagles have been impressive so far this season, but this should be a reasonably comfortable win for the Lions.
