10 million is the selling price for Winx’s filly

Business was brisk at the Inglis Easter Sales with the Pierro X Winx filly unsurprisingly the top lot over the two days.

News Insights

  • Coolmore the vendor for the top two lots
  • Three of the top six lots by the sire Zoustar
  • Four of the top six lots were fillies
  • 18 lots made a million or more

The two days of action from the Inglis Easter Sales produced a huge amount of interest across social media as the money was spent in huge amounts on the yearlings in the catalogue. The Winx filly by Pierro was always going to be the star attraction and so she proved.

Buying yearlings can be a tough gig as a great pedigree on the page does not always translate to ability on the track. Winx was one of the finest fillies seen on a racetrack anywhere in the world in the last decade but will the money spent on her first offspring prove to be a bargain or will she turn out to be massively overpriced?

Winx now trying to turn into a star broodmare

All eyes were on the Pierro X Winx filly in the catalogue, the first live offspring of the wonder mare. Having lost her first foal by I Am Invincible and Winx then having to fight for her own life, this filly was always going to prove popular.

Debbie Kepitis who was one of Winx’s owners secured the filly for the 10 million price, though of course she will not have to pay the full amount given that she does not have to pay herself.

The filly will go into training with Chris Waller who looked after Winx through her racing career. The fillies debut will be one of the most anticipated that racing has seen anywhere in the world but it is a huge burden on everyone associated with her that the expectations will be through the roof.

Stewart misses out but invests heavily at the sales

American investor John Stewart was the underbidder on the Winx yearling at nine million but he did not leave the Inglis Easter Sales empty-handed. Six lots were snapped up by Stewart who is now looking for the right trainer or trainers in Australia to send them to.

It is only 19 months since Stewart’s Resolute Racing purchased their first horse but they closed out 2023 with a strong presence at the sales in America and have continued that over to Australia to start 2024 with a new venture.

In total, Stewart’s purchases cost 5.44 million which included the second top lot of the sales, an I Am Invincible filly out of Booker. Her dam was a Group 1 winner, saluting in the 2019 Oakleigh Plate and also a two-year-old winner so this filly is bred to be sharp early.

Other yearlings to note at the Inglis Sales

There were three by Zoustar in the top six sold which continues his growth as one of the top sires of the moment. They went to James Herron, Tom Magnier and the China Horse Club so the right owners are investing in his offspring to continue that reputation.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott team, in partnership with others, took home three of the 18 lots that made a million plus over the two days. Given their success once more with the two-year-old division this season, that should not come as any surprise.

Perhaps the pick of their three will be the cheapest one, an Exceed And Excel filly out of multiple Group 2 winner Dame Giselle who was owned by Go Bloodstock who have this year's Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot with Waterhouse. Again, this is a pedigree filled with speed and one that should be seen early in the spring.

If you have never been to a thoroughbred sale before, it is something that you should add to your bucket list. On a day when a horse with a pedigree like the Winx filly goes through the ring, the atmosphere is electric. We look forward to seeing her on the track.
