Before we into the details of the the NSW v QLD odds and State of Origin betting tips, let’s take a closer look at the two sides vying for the State of Origin title in 2024. We’ll begin with the current holders of the Shield, the QLD Maroons, and follow up with a look at the New South Wales team trying to snatch it back off them.

Queensland Maroons (QLD)

• The current champions – Since 2006, the Maroons have won 14 of the 18 possible series. They’ve gone back to back in 2022 and 2023, so they’ll be aiming for a three-peat in 2024.
• State of Origin Winners History – Titles Won – 25 – 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2002 (Drawn Series but held shield), 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2022, 2023.

The case for a QLD Series Win

• Aiming for a 3 peat. There’s no doubt winning 3 straight titles will be a huge motivation for the Maroons, not that they need any more motivation to win an Origin series.
• Consistent squad. I don’t see a lot of changes from 2023 for the Maroons. You have DCE and Munster in the halves, Walsh’s speed at the back and Harry Grant/Ben Hunt sharing the hooker duties. Billy Slater is a lucky man with so much talent at his disposal.
• Game 2 in Melbourne. I think that most neutral fans who live in Melbourne would support the Maroons, mainly because of the Storm connection in the Maroons squad. There’s the legendary Billy Slater as coach, the fan-favourite Cam Munster and inspirational Storm captain Harry Grant. As well as Storm legends like Cam Smith and Cooper Cronk who starred for QLD.

The case against a QLD Series Win

• Dealing with the “favourite” tag. We all know the Maroons love to be the underdog. They simply feed on it. But in 2024, the odds say they’ll be favourites with the Blues suffering injuries in key positions.

• Injuries. Like the Blues, the Maroons do have a few injury issues to consider. Such as, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui is out for the season and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow currently has a hamstring injury.  

• Game 1 in Sydney. QLD has lost 3 of their last 4 at Stadium Australia. So if they do fall behind 1-0 after Game 1, the Blues momentum would be tough to back against.

New South Wales Blues (NSW)

• State of Origin Winners History – Titles Won – 16 – 1985, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021.

The case for a NSW Series Win

• A new coach brings optimism. Freddy Fittler is out as NSW coach and Michael Maguire will look to make his mark in the 2024 series. He’s got the experience at NRL and International levels. Highlighted by a 12-6 record as Kiwi coach and guiding the Rabbitohs to premiership glory in 2014. This will likely be his toughest challenge yet but I think he could be up to it.
• Injuries bring opportunities. Sure, the Blues are going to be missing a lot of experience in 2024 mainly due to injuries. But it presents an opportunity for their younger stars to step up at Origin level. 
• Nicho Hynes. He got his chance last year at Origin level but it was off the interchange bench which was just 12 minutes of action. I think if he can win the number 6 or 7 jersey for the Blues, he could be a real difference-maker as he’s shown for the Sharks since moving from the Storm a few years ago. 

The case against a NSW Series Win

• Injuries to key players. The Blues are coming into the 2024 series with plenty of injuries in key positions. At this stage, they’ll already be missing star Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary, Cam Murray, Gutherson, Campbell Graham and Tommy Turbo in the centres. So the Blues depth will need to stand up.
• Nathan Cleary’s hamstring injury. As mentioned, Cleary is out of Game 1 and maybe Game 2 as well. So it looks like Mitch Moses will be called up again after getting the nod in Game 3 last year. The issue? He’s been injured for most of the season in the NRL (since Round 3), so he’s definitely going to be underdone.
• Game 3 at Suncorp. If the Blues get into a 1-1 series decider, winning at Suncorp in Game 3 will be a tough battle that they usually can’t overcome.

Punters’ Favourite State of Origin Betting Markets

• Head-to Head Betting – A simple bet on whether the QLD Maroons and NSW Blues will win an individual game outright.
