Who has a chance to be State of Origin Winners in 2024 and why?

Before we into the details of the the NSW v QLD odds and State of Origin betting tips, let’s take a closer look at the two sides vying for the State of Origin title in 2023. We’ll begin with the current holders of the Shield, the QLD Maroons, and follow up with a look at the New South Wales team trying to snatch it back off them.

Queensland Maroons (QLD)

  • The current champions – Won 11 State of Origin series in 12 years prior to losing in 2018 and 2019 before winning the title back in 2020 and 2022.
  • State of Origin Winners History – Titles Won – 25 – 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2002 (Drawn Series but held shield), 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2022.

The case for a QLD Series Win

  • They’ve based their team on NRL form. It’s pretty clear that Billy Slater has opted to go with players that are in great form at the moment. This includes the likes of Fifita, Tom Flegler, Tabuai-Fidow and Walsh.
  • Reece Walsh gets his chance. It’s no surprise that Slater, a great fullback himself, has selected Walsh in Game 1. He’s a true X-factor and should thrive in the Origin format, as long as he can keep his error count under control. His speed and elusiveness have been a feature at the Broncos this season, so he’ll be one to watch as this series unfolds.
  • Same spine. The Maroons get the benefit of playing with a consistent spine that featured in the 2022 series victory. DCE will lineup at halfback with Munster in the halves and Hunt at hooker. They’ve now played together in 4 straight Origin games and that can only benefit the Maroons in their attacking gameplan.

The case against a QLD Series Win

  • Leaving out Ponga and Gagai. Kalyn Ponga was player of the match in Game 3 in 2022 and obviously, Slater is concerned with his recent HIA issues. However, missing the experienced pair of Ponga and Gagai could come back to hurt the Maroons when it counts.

  • Defence in the centres. It’s fair to say Valentine Holmes hasn’t had his greatest season for the struggling Cowboys and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has been playing fullback. So they’ll need to be at their 100% best in defence to stop the likes of Turbo and Latrell.

  • Missing Felise Kaufusi. Unfortunately, Kaufusi has been suspended and won’t be able to lineup. He’s been a key feature of the Maroons squad since 2018. His brutal defence will be missed when it comes to stopping the Blues forward pack.

  • Josh Papalii retirement. The retirement of Josh Papalii from Origin could be a huge blow for the Maroons forward pack.

New South Wales Blues (NSW)

  • State of Origin Winners History – Titles Won – 16 – 1985, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021.

The case for a NSW Series Win

  • The return of Tommy Turbo and Mitchell in the centres. There’s no doubt these two superstars were sorely missed by the Blues in 2022. Turbo won player of the series in 2021 and Mitchell scored 4 tries in the 2021 series as well.
  • The Panthers combination. Freddy Fittler has continued the theme of selecting the Panthers' spine with the likes of Cleary, Luai and former Panther Apisai Koroisau lining up for the Blues in Game 1. There’s also Yeo, Martin in the forward pack and To’o returns on the wing.
  • Nicho Hynes off the bench. The 2022 Dally M medalist gets his first taste of Origin and he’ll likely be hard to stop off the bench. He can play multiple positions from halfback to fullback so look for Freddy to expose the Maroons with the skill of Hynes.
  • They get a home-ground advantage in Game 3, if they can win just one of the first two games, this gives them a great opportunity to possibly close out the series in Sydney. With Game 1 at a neutral venue, it’s a huge opportunity for the Blues to avenge the 2022 series defeat.

The case against a NSW Series Win

  • Tevita Pangai Junior. There’s no doubt TPJ is a left-field selection as the Blues are looking for his aggression to come out in the first 20 minutes. However, the question is whether he can control that aggression or will QLD get under his skin?
  • Potentially picking underdone players. The likes of Tom Trbojevic, Josh Addo-Carr and Liam Martin have had their battles with injuries in the 2023 NRL season. So the Blues will be hoping they can make it through the brutal 80-minute encounter without any issues.
  • Dealing with the “favourite tag”. QLD always seem to be the underdog coming into an Origin series and they just love it. The pressure is on NSW as the favourite in 2023, so can they overcome it?

State of Origin Special Betting Markets

There are always a range of special betting markets on the State of Origin Series, and a range of the most varied betting markets are usually launched a week or two before the series begins.

Punters’ Favourite State of Origin Betting Markets

  • Head-to Head Betting – A simple bet on whether the QLD Maroons and NSW Blues will win an individual game outright. Head-to-Head Odds on State of Origin are usually quite even although occasionally some betting sites offer inflated odds in order to balance their books in more lopsided betting markets.
  • Line Betting – Line betting options on State of Origin don’t usually see one side favoured by a whole lot given how close these games often are, and this year is no different. Line betting is a type of handicap betting where either Team A or Team B receive a head start with ‘the line’ being where the two teams meet at equal odds, usually in the range of $1.88 to $1.91.
By way of example, if you punt on The Queensland Maroons to beat a line of +3.5 against the New South Wales Blues in Game 1, even if the Maroons lose the match by 3 points, you will still win your bet.
  • Anytime Try Scorer: Bet on a player from either QLD or NSW to score a try at any time in any State of Origin 2022 match
  • Series Leading Tryscorer – Take a punt on which player will be the leading tryscorer across the entire NRL State of Origin 2022 series.
  • Series Betting –A simple bet type on which team will win the series outright. If you’d like to pick the correct series score the NRL State of Origin Series Scores Betting Odds will be available around 2 weeks out from Game 1.

State of Origin Betting Tips

  • Check for Injuries to Key Players – As NSW have the greater player depth to cover any injuries to key players, check the current status of the players involved. If QLD are beset by injuries for any match in State of Origin 2023, that could potentially have a big impact on their chances.
  • Never underestimate QLD – On the other hand, when written off by experts and bookies, QLD are at their most dangerous. Anyone old enough to remember Fatty Vautin’s team of unknowns that humiliated NSW 3-0 in 1995 knows all about it.
  • Prop Bets Markets Usually Offer the Best Returns – Betting markets like Line Betting, First Tryscorer, Anytime Tryscorer, Most Tackles, Wally Lewis Medal Winner etc. usually offer better betting odds and potential returns than head-to-head match betting in State of Origin.
