Brisbane Broncos have signed yet another player to a new deal ahead of the 2024 NRL season. This time, the club has re-signed their captain, Adam Reynolds. The 33-year-old's new deal will keep him at the club through the 2025 season and allow him to become a coach once he retires.
Reynolds signs new contract
Adam Reynolds has been at Brisbane Broncos since the 2022 NRL season. In that short time, he’s emerged as one of the club’s best players and as the club’s top leader. He was named club captain in January of his debut season at Broncos and remains so now.
The club skipper was set to leave Broncos at the end of the 2024 season. His new deal will keep him at the Suncorp Stadium through the 2025 season, but it’s a little more complicated than that.
According to reports from The Courier Mail, Reynolds will take a massive pay cut in 2024 and transition to a coaching role at Broncos throughout the 2024 and 2025 season. This move allows the Broncos flexibility to re-sign more players, which has been their strategy this offseason.
Other Broncos new contracts
Reynolds is the latest Broncos star to sign a new deal. Young star Ezra Mam has just signed a new contract. Broncos are also set to re-sign Reece Walsh to a massive new contract worth $1.1 million per year, making him the most expensive player in Broncos’ history.
Per the reports about Reynolds’ new deal, these contracts would not have been possible without the club captain signing on for one more year.
Reynolds was set to make over $800,000 in 2024. He has reportedly taken a significant pay cut in order to ensure that Broncos could re-sign Walsh and Mam. Securing a new deal for Walsh was especially important for the club, as Sydney Roosters are looking to sign the wonderkid fullback.
Broncos also signed star prop Payne Haas to a new $3.5 million contract extension this offseason.
Reynolds talks up coaching opportunities
If you follow the NRL at all, you know that this has not been a great week for Adam Reynolds. The Broncos captain was caught on film drunkenly fighting with his vice captain Pat Carrigan outside a bar after Broncos’ fan day.
This new deal is a sign that Reynolds has put all this behind him. According to Reynolds, he is only focused on the future.
“There’s a lot of these young boys coming through that I like to get around and upskill them,” Reynolds said following the news of his new deal.
“I could [coach an NRL team] down the track, but I know I have to learn my trade first once I get out of playing. It’s not as easy transitioning from player to head coaching straight away, but I would definitely love to jump into an assistant coach or development role and stay involved in the game in some way.”
Reynolds called himself a “footy nerd” and believes he can pass his passion for the game and footy knowledge on to the next generation.
Reynolds will suit up for Broncos in Las Vegas on March 3 against Sydney Roosters for the NRL’s marquee double header season opener in the US. Broncos are big favourites for that match, according to the betting sites..
