Yet another Melbourne City star has announced his decision to leave the club after. Following Jamie Maclaren’s announcement that he was leaving City after this season, his long-time teammate Curtis Good revealed that this year is also his last at Melbourne City. The defender says he plans to look for another club outside the A-League.
Good announces Melbourne City departure
At a press conference on Tuesday, Melbourne City defender Curtis Good announced that he will be leaving the club after their 2023-24 finals series campaign.
“As a Melbourne boy, it’s been a privilege to represent this club for as long as I have,” Good said.
“From giving me the confidence as a young player to make the leap to Europe, and all the success we’ve shared since returning to Australia, the club has played a massive role in shaping me both on and off the pitch.
“My teammates, the staff and our fans have had a lasting impact on me. I love this club, and to have an award named after me is a huge honour. My family and I will always call the club home.”
Good, 31, joined Melbourne Heart from the Australian Institute of Sport youth academy in 2011. After one strong season at the club, he left Australia to join Newcastle United in England. Good never made a league appearance for the Magpies and rejoined Melbourne City in 2018 after six seasons in England.
Across his two stints with City, Good has made 179 appearances for the club. He is Melbourne City’s most-capped player. The club have announced that they will rename their ‘Clubman of the Year’ Award to the ‘Curtis Good Award’.
Good will not play for another A-League side. He revealed he plans on looking for opportunities abroad. No clubs have emerged as likely destinations for the 31-year-old. Some have speculated that Good may sign for a Saudi Arabian or Qatari club to secure one last big paycheck before he calls it quits on his soccer career.
Changes coming to Melbourne City
Curtis Good is the second player to announce his departure in as many days. Five time A-League Golden Boot winner Jamie Maclaren has also announced his plans to leave Melbourne City.
The Australian international is the A-League’s all-time top goalscorer and has been essential to Melbourne City’s recent success over the past half-decade.
“Jamie embodies everything we stand for as a Club, he’s been an outstanding footballer for us and an exceptional role model for his teammates and young fans,” Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said.
“It’s a bittersweet moment for me to leave the Club that I’ve called home for the past five and a half years,” the player said in City’s press release announcing his move.
Maclaren has been linked to multiple clubs in Japan. Like Good, there’s also a strong chance that he goes to a high-paying Saudi Arabian or Qatari club.
Good and Maclaren’s final match at Melbourne City could come as soon as this Saturday. The reigning premiers take on their Melbourne Derby rivals Melbourne Victory this Sunday in a finals series elimination-finals.
