Alisson Becker out for at least two weeks with hamstring injury

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker will be sidelined for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury. The Brazilian was injured against Man City last week.

News Insights

  • Alisson suffered a hamstring injury late on against Manchester City last weekend.
  • Klopp said it is not a “day by day” injury.
  • Alisson is expected to return for Liverpool against Manchester United on December 17.
  • Diogo Jota will also be out for some weeks with a muscular injury.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Alisson Becker’s hamstring injury is more severe than it first seemed. Klopp, speaking to the media ahead of Liverpool’s Europa League match against LASK, said he expects that Alisson will be out for at least two weeks.

If Klopp is correct, Alisson will miss Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League matches against Fulham, Sheffield United, and Crystal Palace. The Brazilian goalkeeper could be back for Liverpool’s next Europa League match against Union Saint-Gilloise. It is more likely his return would come against Manchester United in the Premier League on December 17.

Not “day by day,” says Klopp

Alisson suffered a hamstring injury late on against Manchester City last weekend. The two-time Golden Glove winner went down, but after a delay he was able to continue the match. Because he was able to continue, many speculated the injury was not that severe. Klopp clarified this week that this is not the case.

When asked about Alisson’s injury status, Klopp said it is not a “day by day” injury. “He will not play tomorrow [against LASK], not on Sunday, probably not the week after. Then it should be kind of OK," said Klopp.

If this timeline holds, Alisson will miss three Premier League fixtures for Liverpool against Fulham, Sheffield United, and Crystal Palace. Alisson is expected to return for Liverpool against Manchester United on December 17.

Kelleher to replace Alisson

Without Alisson Liverpool will have to rely on 25-year-old Irishman Caoimhin Kelleher between the sticks. Kelleher has not played for Liverpool since their last Europa League fixture against Toulouse on November 9. Liverpool lost that match, but they have won every other Europa League match they have played in with Kelleher in goal.

Kelleher lined up for Liverpool in their last match against LASK way back on September 21 in Liverpool’s first Europa League match of the season. The Reds won that match 3-1 away in Linz. The betting sites expect Liverpool to put up a similar result at home and to secure a spot in the next round.

Liverpool are also one of the favourites to win the Premier League. PlayUp currently has Klopp’s men as third favourites to win the league, only behind Man City and Arsenal.

Other Liverpool injuries

Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference was not just about Alisson’s injury status. The German manager revealed that Diogo Jota will also be out for some weeks with a muscular injury.

Diogo will take a little bit longer [than Alisson]. We don't know exactly how long, but it's a bit more severe. We have to see,” said Klopp.

Left back Andy Robertson and midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic are also out with injuries for Liverpool.

Out of all Liverpool’s injured players, Alisson is surely the one who they will miss the most. Liverpool will need to play extra solid defensively without him if they want to keep their title chances alive.
