The betting sites think Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag could be the first EPL manager sacked

Erik ten Hag is now one of the favourites in the next Premier League manager to be sacked soccer betting market.

News Insights

  • Reports say ten Hag is on “thin ice” at Manchester United.
  • Sites like BetVictor have ten Hag as the odds even favourite to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season.
  • INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe will buy 25% of Manchester United.
  • Julian Nagelsmann is the favourite to be the new Manchester United manager.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is now firmly on the hot seat, according to the betting sites. Following Manchester United’s loss to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, the Dutch manager skyrocketed up the list of potential managers to be fired first this season.

Under ten Hag, Manchester United have lost 0-3 in two consecutive matches and currently sit 8th in the Premier League table. The Red Devils are also third in their Champions League group.

Erik ten Hag could be sacked soon

A series of bad results for Manchester United now has many fans, soccer betting sites, and allegedly, even Manchester United considering whether Erik ten Hag needs to leave his post at Old Trafford.

Reports say ten Hag is on “thin ice” at Manchester United following two consecutive 0-3  losses to Manchester City and Newcastle United, respectively. The sports betting industry has reacted to this news by putting ten Hag among the favourites on the list of Premier League managers next to be sacked.

Sites like BetVictor have ten Hag as the odds even favourite to be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season. Most other betting sites have ten Hag as second or third favourites behind relegation candidates Andoni Iraola and Vincent Kompany.

New Manchester United owners adding fuel to the fire

Adding to the speculation that Erik ten Hag will soon be sacked is the news surrounding Manchester United’s new owners.

While it has not been confirmed yet, most concrete reporting says that  INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe will buy 25% of Manchester United. He will then take over all footballing operations from the Red Devils’ current owners, the Glazer family. These reports also claim that Ratcliff is keen to put his own stamp on the club by hiring his own hand-picked manager to replace Erik ten Hag.

As Gary Neville said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football last week, the uncertainty surrounding what Ratcliff will do has caused everyone at Manchester United, including ten Hag, to fear for their jobs.

Julian Nagelsmann favourite to take over

If Sir Jim Ratcliffe does decide to fire Erik ten Hag and hire a new Manchester United manager, he will not have many options to choose from. Most “big name” managers are currently employed at relatively stable and high profile clubs.

According to the betting sites, Julian Nagelsmann is the favourite to be the new Manchester United manager. Unibet gives him $6.00 odds. Zinedine Zidane has the same odds, followed by Graham Potter ($9.00), Roberto De Zerbi ($10.00), and Julen Lopetegui ($12.00).

Julian Nagelsmann is currently managing the German national team, meaning United would have to wait until after the 2024 Euros in Germany before he could take charge.

If Manchester United does sack ten Hag, whatever happens after will not be pretty. Unless Jim Ratcliff can somehow bring top manager in right away, the Red Devils could fall even lower than where they are right now before they are able to hit a hard reset on the ten Hag and Glazer era.
