Saturday Racing Tips - Eagle Farm 08/06/24

It’s Queensland Oaks week at Eagle Farm and the field looks an excellent one for the Group 1 race. There are some solid Listed races on the card as well where we have a couple of picks that we fancy which have been priced up at the head of the market on the betting sites. Our roughie of the day goes in the big one on a quick backup after contesting the Queensland Derby just seven days ago. Will she have more luck taking on the girls than the boys? Let’s dig in and find out.

BEST BET - #3 Yellow Brick 

It has been a while since this gelding got his head in front but this track has been a happy hunting ground for him in the past with two wins and two second-place finishes in four visits, so if a win is to come for him, there is a strong chance that it will be here. The pair of runner-up efforts have both come in Group 3 company here, a position that he has filled in all three of his runs at Listed level, as this is. He deserves to get another win on the board and this looks a gilt-edged opportunity for him to do exactly that. 
 
DANGER - #8 Wategos 

Solid performer got his head back in front in a BM84 last time out. That was the easiest contest that he had run in for some time and should go a long way to getting his confidence back after some stiff tasks. Enjoyed a great spell in July and August last year, notching three wins on the bounce, including the Murwillumbah Cup over 1550m. James Orman is 2/2 on him and he copes well with all underfoot conditions so is an adaptable type.   
 
VALUE BET - #2 Namazu 

Arrives in search of a hat-trick of wins, up to a tougher contest than either of those that he has won. He does have a Listed win in his back catalogue of form which makes him of some interest, especially given the level of form he has shown of late. Is more exposed than the pair mentioned above but his win at McKay was the first time in his career that he has won first up so he does seem to be better than ever this autumn.

BEST BET - #1 Hedged 

Came from a long way back to grab second in the Group 2 Arrowfield at Randwick in April. Connections changed tactics last time when he finished in third position in the VOBIS Gold Dash, sitting second early, much closer to the speed. That at least showed that he is not a one-dimensional type and is in a Listed contest here. This level should suit him better and he has the assistance of Jamie Kah back in the saddle who has won on him the twice that she has got the call. 
 
DANGER - #2 Moravia 

A Heavy 10 surface after a 10-week spell might have been a bit too tough for this gelding at Sunshine Coast last time out, connections giving him another four weeks ahead of this to get over that contest. He has only managed to get his head in front once in his eight-race career which would be a slight concern for any punters looking to back him for win purposes but a repeat of his close-up second to Cylinder in the Group 2 Run To The Rose at Rosehill last September would give him leading claims.   
 
VALUE BET - #7 Tiger Shark 

Likes to be on the pace so has a solid barrier in four to work from. Saluted at Doomben last time out in a lesser contest than this but was a Listed winner over 1000m at this track in April. She might just find 1200m here a touch on the long side for her in this class but she is a consistent type who should run her race. Most of the other pace angles in here are drawn outside her so she should be able to get into a nice rhythm on the front end which could see her in the frame.

BEST BET - #4 Scarlet Oak 

Won three of her four career races so far, the only defeat coming when she was tried in a Group 3 over 1400m which has been shown since to be far too short for her. She produced the best run of her life so far when saluting in The Roses at Doomben last time out, a Group 2 contest. She steps up another 200m in distance here as well as up to the top level for the first time but she looks the type who will handle both with ease. Given how few miles are on the clock, she still fits into the could be anything bracket so there could be any amount of improvement to come. 
 
DANGER - #1 Molly Bloom 

Fifth behind Scarlet Oak in The Roses last time out but that run can be upgraded as she got bumped out the barriers and ended up having to come wide despite starting in four. She is going to need a smoother passage through if she is to reverse those places with the winner but she shapes as if the extra distance is going to be a plus for her and the pick of her New Zealand form is at a solid level. 
 
VALUE BET - #5 Moonlight Magic 

Got a mile back in the Queensland Derby last week when she was the closest to Warmonger at the line, albeit a rather distant second. She was a good 10 lengths off that rival at halfway and left her challenge later after swinging in widest of all. She is backed up quickly and it will be interesting to see what that form is worth but she was a tidy distance in front of the third and would have been closer to the winner with a more aggressive sit. She might get that down in distance here and back against her own sex.
