Saturday Racing Tips Flemington 30/03/24

Australian Cup Day at Flemington is always one of the top afternoons of racing in the year and the 2024 renewal is shaping up to be superb. 

We head to Flemington on Saturday to take on the betting sites with our main horse racing tips. Our roughie this week is not quite the price that we often put up but it is hard to resist a runner who is looking for back-to-back wins in the same race and there has been market support for him in the early stages of the market which helps with the confidence. We also have a Best Bet and a Next Best for an excellent afternoon of racing in prospect.

BEST BET - #4 Ameena
A perfect 2/2 so far in her career, saluting by four lengths at Bendigo on her debut before a slick 2.25l winner on the new Caulfield Heath track. It was more impressive that she has done it from behind and then from the front so she is clearly adaptable to the conditions of a race. The step up to 1200m from 1000m does not look like it will be any sort of an issue for her and although all of these are entitled to do better in time, she looks the most precocious at this stage.   

THE DANGER - #3 Tobeornottobe 
Yet to get her head in front but she has shown huge ability in her two starts, both times behind Hayasugi. They were in the Blue Diamond Preview and Prelude so she has been thrown in the deep end early on but has shown that she is not out of her depth. Up to 1200m is a slight question mark given that she has so much natural speed but the strength of that form means that she is going to be hard to keep out of the frame if she does stay. 

VALUE BET  - #10 Miss Swift
Three lengths behind Ameena on her racecourse debut was a solid opening effort. That was the second career start for Ameena so the experience should not be lost on Miss Swift and better is expected here. She did not get the clearest run that day, making up ground well once she had finally found space. The step up to 1200m will be a big plus on that visual evidence and it would not be a surprise if she is able to get a little closer this time.

BEST BET - #13 Estriella
Enjoyed a solid time of things in the spring but has taken her form to a new level so far in this prep. A stylish Group 3 winner at Caulfield in February she pitched up in the Inglis Sprint at this track earlier in March with a switch of tactics to a more forceful ride, making all of the running to salute. That was made more impressive with those who had been up on the speed with her early all well down the field. She can take another step forward here. 

THE DANGER - #2 I Am Unstoppable 
Split Ozzmosis and Shinzo in his final start of the spring but he was disappointing on his first run of this prep when a well-beaten 8th in the Lightning. Admittedly that was a strong field of older horses so perhaps at this stage of his career that was a touch out of his league and he made a respiratory noise so that can be forgiven. That does raise a slight concern ahead of this next start but the ability is there to play a part. 

VALUE BET  - #3 Stretan Angel
Just in front of I Am Unstoppable in the Danehill over this same course and trip back in October. Conditions were softer that day than they will be this weekend and her record is 2/2 on soft and 0/3 on good. She has been runner-up twice on good ground so it is not a massive concern, more just a point that she would probably appreciate things a touch softer. She was behind that same rival in the Coolmore and this is her first start since that November contest.

BEST BET - #1 Mr Brightside
The 2000m distance is the issue facing those who want to be with Mr Brightside but it is even more of a concern for those who are backing Pride Of Jenni as she only has one way of going. Mr Brightside is more tractable in the early stages of his races and while he is 0/3 over 2000m, he was only just touched off in the Cox Plate in the spring, going under against the Hong Kong star Romantic Warrior. A repeat of that might still be enough and he was doing some good work late when chasing home Pride Of Jenni in the All-Star Mile last time out with that mare getting the run of the race. 

THE DANGER - #8 Atishu
Well behind both Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni in the Orr to kick off her prep, that is easy enough to put a line through as her record first up is not the strongest. She showed what she is capable of second up when landing the Group 2 Blamey over 1600m at this track to make it 3/5 when she has run at Flemington. Her final start in the spring saw her salute in the Group 1 MacKinnon over this track and distance and that winning form both at this level and over this far is a big plus for her chances.  

VALUE BET  - #2 Cascadian
Our roughie has been nibbled at in the early markets. He ran on to finish third to Pride Of Jenni and Mr Brightside in the All-Star Mile but his closing splits were the notable thing that suggests that he is crying out for the step back up to 2000m. He has two wins and a second in four starts when he has raced over 2000m in the past so that is a strong record to bring to the table. The most recent of those was when saluting in this race last year and he will have been primed to peak at the right time again.
