No season in the Premier League’s 32 year history has featured more goals than the 2023/24 Premier League season. Harry Maguire’s equaliser against Sheffield United in Manchester United’s 4-2 win over the Blades secured the record breaking season.

As of Wednesday's matches, Premier League clubs have scored 1,092 goals. The previous record, which was set just last season, was 1,084 goals. There are 45 matches left to play in this Premier League season.

Scoring on the rise in the EPL

Wednesday’s record-securing goal from Harry Maguire confirmed that the Premier League is in a golden age of goalscoring.

Three of the five highest ever scoring EPL seasons have been in the last five seasons. The 2022/23 season, last year, set the record for most goals scored with 1,084. In 2021/22, teams scored 1,071 goals.

Clubs in 2023/24 have blown these previous records out of the water. There are still 45 matches left to play. If those matches stick to the EPL’s current average of 3.26 goals per game, 1,329 goals will have been scored when the season ends in May.

Compared to the other top five European leagues, the Premier League is a major outlier. The Bundesliga, with an average of 3.18 goals per game, is the only top league comparable to the EPL.

Serie A, La Liga, and Ligue 1 have all experienced sharp declines in goalscoring. La Liga has the third most goals per game, behind the EPL and Bundesliga, averaging just 3.06 goals per game. Both Serie A and Ligue 1 are averaging less than 2.60 goals per game.

Arsenal lead the way

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have received plaudits this season for being one of the best defensive teams in Europe. They are one of the best attacking teams in Europe as well. The

No EPL club has scored more than the Gunners’ 82 goals so far this season. Arsenal also have a league-leading +56 goal differential.

Manchester City and Liverpool sit just behind with 76 and 75 goals scored, respectively.

EPL Golden Boot race

Despite the last five years being a golden age for EPL goal scoring, there are very few top goalscorers in the league right now.

Erling Haaland, who scored 36 goals last season, setting a Premier League record, is the only player to cross the 30-goal threshold since 2017/18.

This season, Haaland leads the EPL Golden Boot race alongside Chelsea’s Cole Palmer with 20 goals each.

The betting sites back the Norwegian to outpace Palmer and win the Golden Boot at the end of the season.

Unibet  gives Haaland $1.55 odds to win the Golden Boot. Palmer is a distant outsider at $4.00. You can get $7.50 odds to bet on Ollie Watkins, who’s currently on 19 goals, one behind Haaland and Palmer.
