Randwick 06/04/24

There are four Group 1 races at Randwick on Saturday for the opening day of the Championships day 1 with the forecast looking brutal.

All the talk on the betting sites this week is about the rain that Randwick is forecast ahead of Saturday. The predictions range from awful all the way through to biblical but one thing that they can all agree on is that the Good 4 which is the current state of the ground at the time of writing is going to be heavy by the time we get to the weekend.

Both the T.J. Smith and the Doncaster are on the card but we have skipped past them for tipping purposes, liking our chances better on some of the other races on the afternoon instead. We landed two winners and a second from our three selections last Saturday and hope that we can roll that form over to another weekend of superb horse racing action.

Randwick Race 2 - Schweppes Chairman’s Quality (2600m)

Selections:
#11 Circle Of Fire - $4.20
#2 Stockman - $5.50
#12 Double Cherry (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) - $31.00
#4 Hopeful - $16.00

BEST BET - #11 Circle Of Fire
Solid type when trained by Sir Michael Stoute in England, he caught the eye doing some good work late in the day when fourth at Rosehill in mid-March. Ran well in the Queen’s Vase over 2800m at Royal Ascot last June before his first encounter with ground on the soft side of good at Hamilton the following month. It was Soft 6 at Rosehill last time over 1900m and the step up to this sort of trip is going to be a big plus for his chances here.

THE DANGER - #2 Stockman
When it comes to deep ground and a stiff test of stamina, Stockman is one of the horses that you immediately look for on a card. The veteran has been there, done that and got the winner’s rugs with a 1/25 record on good but 8/30 when the ground has been soft or worse. He has yet to get himself into a threatening position in recent starts but there have been excuses with most of them coming over distances that are too short and on ground that is too quick. There will be no such problems here and his dour stamina makes him a huge player in this contest.

VALUE BET  - #12 Double Cherry
Rated short of Circle Of Fire in England but he has shown a liking for soft conditions over there so should be able to close up that rating gap given the forecast. He finished his racing in England with a runner-up effort to Post Impressionist over 2800m at York, solid form that has already been boosted in Australia with the William Haggas horse winning a couple of weeks ago. It took him a while to settle in but more of a stamina test at Wyong was a plus and stretching out further still here is a big plus.

Randwick Race 5 - Newhaven Park Country Championships Final (1400m)

Selections:
#1 Bandi’s Boy (BEST BET) - $2.60
#7 Tribeca Star - $9.00
#2 Bianco Vilano - $9.00
#8 Rainbow Connection - $19.00

BEST BET - #1 Bandi’s Boy
Has taken his form to a new level in 2024, the winner of five of his 10 career races now. The most recent of those was a Group 3 last weekend, a run that stands out like a beacon at this level. He enjoys plenty of juice in the ground, twice a winner on soft and once on heavy so conditions will be no issue to him. He needs to give weight away all around bar one rival but he is miles above this field on official ratings and that difference in class can tell.

THE DANGER - #7 Tribeca Star
Won the Grafton qualifier for this final on a Soft 5 surface, just getting the better of Rainbow Connection who should be in the mix himself. He ran well enough on a Heavy 8 at Kembla Grange last November under a huge 61.5kg impost to think that he handles deep ground although the forecast does have this getting very deep. He has finished first or second in three of his four runs over this 1400m distance and is one of the better treated at the weights so he needs plenty of respect.

VALUE BET  - #2 Blanco Vilano
Fourth in this race last year on a Heavy 8 track, he would ideally like it a little closer to good but he handles heavy conditions well enough that he should be right in the mix. Beaten less than two and a half lengths that day, it seems likely that connections have been working back from another try in this race this season. Boasts a strong chance at the weights this year and can improve on his position from 2023.

Randwick Race 9 - ATC Australian Derby (2400m)

Selections:
#14 Zardozi (NEXT BEST) - $2.60
#1 Riff Rocket - $3.00
#2 Tom Kitten - $8.00
#7 Wymark - $9.00

BEST BET - #14 Zardozi
2011 was the last time that a filly won the Derby but the Goldolphin charge might be the one to get the job done if she takes her chance. She was behind the Oaks favourite Orchestral last week and with that contest seven days away, she has a stronger chance of taking on the boys and winning than she does in a week. James Cummings has been a touch non-committal about his plans with the filly but deep ground is perfect for her, 4/6 on soft and 1/1 on heavy.

THE DANGER - #1 Riff Rocket
Winner of the Victoria Derby at Flemington in November over 2500m, his trainer Chris Waller said at the start of this prep that he thought his horse is better over slightly shorter. A winner over 1400m to kick off his spring, he was a close third in the Australian Guineas before saluting in the Rosehill Guineas last time out. He is a class act but with the rain forecast, this is going to be a proper test of stamina at the distance and perhaps that will be his downfall.

VALUE BET  - #2 Tom Kitten
A winner the only time that he has faced heavy ground, that a Listed contest over 1600m at this track but he will have to prove that he has the stamina as he steps up to 2400m for the first time in his career. He saluted in the Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m here at Randwick in October, pulling well clear late on to win by almost four lengths. Interesting to see if he is able to conserve enough energy for the new distance as he has the class at Group 1 level to play a part if his stamina holds.

Jockey Of The Day – James McDonald

There are only four rides on the afternoon for James McDonald but three of them are in Group 1 races and the prices from the horse racing bookmakers would suggest that he will go home disappointed if he does not at least land one win at the top level on Saturday afternoon at Randwick.

R3 - #2 - Witz End - $6.50
R6 - #1 - Storm Boy - $2.60
R7 - #1 - I Wish I Win - $3.80
R9 - #1 - Riff Rocket - $3.00
