According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Tottenham Hotspur have signed one of the brightest prospects in European soccer, Lucas Bergvall, to a five-year contract. Spurs reportedly paid €10m plus add ons to Bergvall's current club, Djurgårdens.
Bergvall, who turned 18 on February 2, will not join the club until after the 2023/24 EPL season. He is expected to become a member of the first team and contribute to the side as soon as he joins.
Spanish giants Barcelona were also interested in signing Bergvall before Spurs persuaded him to join the North London club instead.
Bergvall chooses Spurs
He may not be a household name to you and I now, but Lucas Bergvall is well-known in scouting circles as one of hottest prospects in European soccer. The 18-year-old already has made his senior debut for Sweden and is a first team regular for Djurgårdens in the Swedish top division, the Allsvenskan.
Bergvall was wanted by a number of clubs, including Inter Milan, Brighton, Barcelona, and Tottenham. Until today, it seemed almost certain he would join Barcelona, but a late push by Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou, and his Swedish teammate Dejan Kulusevski reportedly changed his mind.
The deal has not been made official yet, but it’s looking very likely that the 18-year-old Swedish prodigy will be a Tottenham Hotspur player soon.
Tottenham predictions for 2024
Spurs fans were desperate for new signings in the January transfer window to help them secure a place in the Champions League this season.
Unfortunately for them, Bergvall will not be able to help them finish in the top four this season since he will not be joining the club until after the season.
As things stand now without Bergvall, Bet365 gives Tottenham $1.66 odds to end the season in the top four. Man City, Liverpool, and Arsenal are ahead of Spurs as absolute locks to finish in the top four. Aston Villa are just behind the Lilywhites with $2.62 odds. Manchester United are way behind them at $11.00.
Other EPL deadline day transfers
The 2024 January transfer window was a relatively quiet one by recent Premier League standards. This was true about the 2024 EPL deadline day too.
The Bergvall transfer to Spurs is technically a deadline day signing, even though he won’t be joining the club until next season.
Armando Broja’s move to Fulham on loan is probably the most high-profile deadline day move. Nottingham Forest brought in Rodrigo Ribeiro from Sporting CP and signed yet another keeper by signing Strasbourg’s Matz Sels.
Brighton loaned out central midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud to Stuttgart, while Man United let winger Facundo Pellistri go on loan to Getafe.
With so few signings made, we pretty much know what to expect for the rest of the 2023/24 Premier League season. Right now, it’s looking like we’ll get an exciting end to the season with one of the closest title races in recent memory.
