News Insights

  • Spurs sign Timo Werner on loan and Radu Drăgusin permanently.
  • Werner loan contains a buy option.
  • Drăgusin was wanted by Bayern, Napoli, and other big clubs.
  • More signings are likely.

The days of Tottenham sitting pat and not improving their squad with big mid-season signings appears to be over. We’re just over one week into the January transfer window and Spurs have made two major signings. Reports say even more may be on the way.

On Wednesday the club confirmed they signed RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner on loan. Genoa defender Radu Drăgusin also seems to be on his way to the North London club.

Spurs have also let some players go this window. Young fullback Djed Spence will join Genoa on loan as a part of the Drăgusin move. Eric Dier is set to join Bayern Munich on a permanent deal.

Timo Werner to Spurs on loan

Timo Werner was once one of the biggest and brightest prospects in European soccer. The Stuttgart native had clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Chelsea chasing throughout the 20219-20 season. He eventually got his move to Chelsea in 2020, after the club paid €64 million. Unfortunately, the move was not the match-made in heaven Werner hoped it would be.

Werner scored just 10 league goals for Chelsea across two seasons at the club. He frequently found himself offside and outmuscled by Premier League defenders. He was sold back to RB Leipzig in 2022 for just €35 million. He’s now joined Tottenham on loan.

Spurs don’t have nearly as high of expectations for Werner as Chelsea did back in 2020. The German striker will likely not be more than a backup for Spurs to give them another option up front besides Richarlison and Heung-min Son.

If Werner excels with Spurs on loan, the club reportedly have an option to make the loan move a permanent one for just £16 million.

Spurs pip Bayern to Genoa centre back

We’re willing to bet that Radu Drăgusin was not a name on most Premier League fan’s radars before this week. Despite that being the case, he’s been on the radar of tons of top European clubs.

The 21-year-old centre back came through Sportul Studențesc’s academy in his home country of Romania before joining Juventus. After a few loan spells to other Italian clubs, Drăgusin joined Genoa for €8 million in January 2023. Since joining Genoa, his profile has exploded.

Reports claim Napoli, Saudi Arabian clubs, Bayern Munich, and other big names were actively pursuing Drăgusin. Spurs have pipped them all and are set to sign the up-and-coming centre back for €25 million.

Injuries to Spurs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have left Tottenham with no natural centre backs on the roster, so expect to see Drăgusin in the Spurs’ lineup sooner rather than later.

Spurs outgoings

Incoming transfers always get fans excited, but it’s worth mentioning Spurs are also letting some players leave during the January window.

Club legend Hugo Lloris has left the club to join LAFC in MLS. Djed Spence is reportedly joining Genoa on loan as a part of the agreement to sign Drăgusin. Versatile defender Eric Dier is also on his way out. Reports claim Dier will join former Spurs captain Harry Kane at Bayern Munich.

Spurs are fifth in the table now, just one point behind Arsenal in fourth. The betting sites have had Tottenham as one of the favourites to qualify in the top four, but their odds have been getting longer by the week. Hopefully for them, these signings can get Tottenham’s season back on track.
